I have recently just joined the VES, Visual Effects Society as a member. My recent nominations on Playstation A Perfect Day and Smithwicks Squirrel gave me the chance to become part of this exclusive bunch of talent people.
As a global society, the VES is divided into location-based sections, each one managed by a local Section Board. Their aim is to keep London the most dynamic, active and fun place in the world to be a VES member.
They hold a variety of regular events around the West End, including a VES Awards judging event in January, a summer BBQ, job fairs, technology demos, and a holiday party to wrap up the year. They also host exclusive VES screenings throughout the year, many of which include a pre-screening mixer, and Q&A panels with the films’ VFX crews. To keep the conversation going, they invite members and non-members alike to our monthly pub nights, every last Thursday of the month at the Duke of York.
One of the best things about membership in London is being invited to Awards Season Screenings. From October to February, the studios host special preview screenings for films under consideration for awards, such as the prestigious VES award. They’ll put a calendar together to help you keep track of these when the time comes. VES HQ will also pass on my name and address to the studios to send ME screener disks.
